The Design, Construction, and Operation of Sustainable Buildings
Whether you are an HVAC&R system designer, architect, building owner, building manager/operator, or contractor charged with designing a green building, ASHRAE GreenGuide aims to help you answer your biggest question—“What do I do now?” Using an integrated, building systems perspective, it gives you the need-to-know information on what to do, where to turn, what to suggest, and how to interact with other members of the design team in a productive way. Information is provided on each stage of the building process, from planning to operation and maintenance of a facility, with emphasis on teamwork and close coordination among interested parties.

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) is phasing out the iconic incandescent light bulbs and is requiring manufacturers to replace them with new, energy efficient bulbs that comply with EISA's mandated performance levels for incandescent and incandescent halogen bulbs.
The phase-out of the general service bulbs will begin January 1, 2012 starting with the 100W. The 75W will follow in 2013 and the 60W and 40W will follow in 2014. This means you will have to use more efficient lighting alternatives and there are plenty!

U.S. Army Steps Up Requirements for Greening Building, Lighting - Starting in fiscal year 2013,
designs for new construction and major renovations are to incorporate the sustainable design and development principles contained in the ASHRAE Standard 189.1. The standard details strategies for siting, cool roofs, solar water heating, advanced metering, storm water management and energy and water efficiency that reduce the environmental impacts of buildings. A new lighting policy, also announced last week, is effectively immediately. As new lighting is installed or existing lights need to be replaced, light bulbs purchased for Army facilities are to meet the energy efficiency standards set by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. 11/03 Reuters
Have a great weekend!
Dominion Electric Supply Company is extremely pleased to partner up with Philips Lighting Company for Georgetown University's Swap It Out! Lightbulb Exchange on
Wednesday, November 17th
12 noon to 3:00PM.
in Red Square
All students who bring a standard 60W to 100W incandescent lamp will be given a free energy efficient Philips Lighting 18W CFL.
Each 100W incandescent lamp swapped out for an 18W Philips CFL will save $32.79 annually in energy costs. And that's only the energy savings ... You'll also save on replacement costs. An average 100W incandescent lamp needs to be replaced every 6 months. The Philips 18W CFL, with an average life rating of 12,000 hours, will last 3.3 years.
For each student swapping out a 100W incandescent to the Philips 18W CFL, it is a win-win situation. Considering that we anticipate swapping out 1000 lamps on Wednesday, we expect the energy savings overall to be about $32,790.00 annually. Now that is a wonderful thing!!!
Good luck Barbara and keep up the good work!
This activity is sponsored by the student groups EcoAction, Georgetown Energy, and The Corp Green Team, with additional sponsorship from University Utilities and Energy Programs, and the Georgetown Sustainability Initiative and is limited to Georgetown Universtity students, staff and faculty members.

Many of your tenants and employees are already taking steps to be greener at home by choosing energy-efficient lighting, appliances, and heating and cooling systems. But what about going green…at work? Did you know that the average office building wastes 30 percent of the energy it consumes? It's easy for employees to help eliminate that waste once they know which easy steps to take.
To help our partners educate and activate employees, tenants, and others, EPA has launched an off-the-shelf package of materials for HR professionals who want to encourage employees to save energy while helping their organization’s bottom line. Use this downloadable toolkit to hold and promote a brown bag session to educate employees about energy use, its impact on the environment, and what they can do to help. We provide a complete PowerPoint presentation (with speaker notes) that you can customize, editable flyers to hang around the building to advertise your session, and an email invitation template.
We’ve made it easy to incorporate energy education into your organization’s training program; start engaging those around you to follow your lead and “bring their green to work! Learn more at the ENERGY STAR website: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=bygtw.showBrownbag

I just finished eight afternoons at the JATC Local 26 Fall Fest. The trade show is a product of the Credit Union loan program which offers special discounts for the students for tools, clothes, cars and mortgages.
Dominion Electric Supply had a wide assortment of Klein, Ideal, Greenlee, and Fluke products for sale from 3-5 every afternoon when the day classes ended and the night classes began . It was a real treat for me to talk to all the first thru fifth year electricians and to the dedicated instructors who freely give their time and talent to help these young men and women become professional skilled tradespeople.
Some of the most popular items of this years show were the
Klein 932-9RE Rare Earth Magnet Torpedo Level ,
Ideal 61-766 660 Amp Meter w/TightSight Bottom display and 35-083 Twist-a-Nut Deburrrer
Greenlee L-77 Conduit Bending level and DTAPKIT drill and tap Kit
Fluke Amprobe ACD-20SW 400A Swivel Clamp Meter and 411SD Laser Distance Meter
I'll highlight these items in my next couple posts for you.
The most important change, because it is likely to generate many consumer inquiries about residential lighting, is the January 1, 2011, requirement in California to replace the standard 100 watt "A-Line" or general service household bulb with a more efficient 72 watt version.
Many of your consumer customers have the impression that this is the result of "ban-the-bulb" legislation such as was passed during the last couple of years in Europe or Australia. That's incorrect. In California, and a year later throughout the U.S., the 100 watt household bulb will be replaced with a lower wattage, more efficient (lumens/watt) version followed by replacements for the 75, 60 and 40 watt lamps in upcoming years. The ALA has written a simple one-page summary of these changes. Find it here: http://tinyurl.com/2vuahvx or on Dominion's website: http://www.dominionelectric.com/faq-ala.htm

Thats right -- Amprobe not only has testers and meters but they have Remcon Relays. This relay switches AC Power ON and OFF using a low voltage control circuit. With a built in transformer there is no need for the step down transformer. A single Remcon Relay can be controlled by multiple switches and multiple relays can be controlled by a single switch. With a Remcon Relay, 22 awg wire can be used to control circuits instead of Romex! Think of the time and money Contractors can save. Call Dominion today for more information on Amprobe's Remcon Relays.

There are many ways to become more green and it isn't just CFL's and LED's (although those are two good options.) I recently completed a job using energy saving halogen lamps. My customer was a high end furniture shop in Georgetown. We needed something that would beautifully show their products and work with their existing lighting fixtures, as well as, save them energy.
After reviewing the space and conducting an energy audit, I recommended replacing their old 90 watt PAR lamps with a Philips Halogen Energy Advantage IR PAR 38 Lamp which would use 70 watts. This simple switch saved them 20 watts per lamp for each of the 137 lamps in the retail space, gave them the same light output, and extended the lamp life. This gave the customer energy savings as well as maintenance savings with a return on investment of under a year.
Proving again that Solutions aren't always complicated! Thanks Pete!

Still Active - The federal Energy Policy Act of 2005 established a tax deduction for energy-efficient commercial buildings applicable to qualifying systems and buildings placed in service from January 1, 2006, through December 31, 2007. This deduction was subsequently extended through 2008, and then again through 2013 by Section 303 of the federal Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 (H.R. 1424, Division B), enacted in October 2008.
A tax deduction of $1.80 per square foot is available to owners of new or existing buildings who
install (1) interior lighting; (2) building envelope, or (3) heating, cooling, ventilation, or hot water
systems that reduce the building’s total energy and power cost by 50% or more in comparison to a building meeting minimum requirements set by ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001. Energy savings must be calculated using qualified computer software approved by the IRS.

The origin of the SQUARE D name. In 1915, the Detroit Fuse and Manufacturing Company introduced a stamped steel version of its enclosed safety switch. Embossed on the switch cover was a square with a capital 'D' for Detroit. The safety switch became so popular that customers requested the 'Square D' safety switch. Two years later, the company, capitalizing on the market demand for this product, changed its name to Square D Company. Today, the SQUARE D brand name remains one of the few created by its customers. in 1991, Schneider Electric acquired Square D Company and added one of the most highly recognized and well-respected brands in the electrical industry to its portfolio.
