It was a beautiful day for the grand opening event for our newest branch location: 5380-B Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia. Mayor William D. Euille officially kicked off the ribbon cutting ceremony and representatives from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce welcomed Dominion Electric Supply into the community.  We had a great group of manufacturers showing new product including Atkore AFC, Greenlee, Hubbell Wiring Devices, Klein, Leviton, Milwaukee, Philips Lightolier, RAB, Schneider Square D, Southwire and Sylvania. And the food trucks were amazing!

Thank you to the customers that were able to attend, I know it's really hard to participate in these events during the day.  For those of you who couldn't stop by, I will dedicate my next couple posts to bring you the product that was featured.

First up, the ever popular, USB Charger Receptacle.  The newest version is from Hubbell Wiring Devices. Hubbell's USB Charger Receptacle provides both USB and AC electrical power in a standard single gang electrical opening (but caution! it doesn't quite fit in metal old work boxes.) It was designed to provide more charging options for personal electronics.

Waterford Fair and Holophane

The Waterford Fair starts today.

The Waterford Fair is the oldest juried crafts fair in Virginia.  The historic village of Waterford welcomes fairgoers from around the world each October for three days of living history, food, handicrafts, and just plain fun.

This year’s Fair is October 4-6, 2013, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Friends and families, adults and children all delight in lively performances of traditional music and dance; reenactments by Colonial and Civil War-era militia and cavalry; art and photography exhibits, hands-on demonstrations of traditional American crafts by 155 renowned artisans (many nationally known) plus the ever-popular tour of private historic homes.

You can learn more about Waterford and the Fair at their website

We had the opportunity to supply lights for Waterford.  They choose fixtures from Holophane.   It was important to maintain the historical look but deliver modern technology and energy savings.   Look for the 70 watt LED Full Cut off fixtures from Holophane's Arlington series.  Full cut off means the light will not be uplight and eliminate light trespass.

We have some cut sheets here:  Holophane LUM PUL  and Holophane LUM AUL

Enjoy this beautiful weekend and maybe I'll see you at the Fair!

National Plug In Day

I heard about National Plug In Day on the radio and thought I'd share it today:

National Plug In Day is a nationwide celebration to heighten awareness of today's widespread availability of plug-in vehicles and highlight the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric cars, trucks, motorcycles, and more. They are fun to drive, are less expensive and more convenient to fuel than gasoline vehicles, are better for the environment, promote local jobs, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Throughout the weekend of September 28 - 29, 2013, events across the US and other countries will celebrate the third annual National Plug In Day.

Check it out! They'll have a bunch of events in our area.

Dominion carries Schneider EV solutions. "Our EVlink™ charging solutions provide a greener, more economical transportation option while helping to reduce the world’s global footprint. EVs are an important step in decreasing energy waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating the harmful effects of global warming."

Southwire's SIMpull CoilPAK

You might notice on our labor saving end caps on the counter, new product from Southwire.  Here's the scoop:

Introducing the SouthWire CoilPak

The SIMpull CoilPAK payoff eliminates the need for heavy, cumbersome spools. Instead workers use a special, patent-pending process to coil NoLube® SIMpull THNN® wire contained in a sturdy, yet lightweight package, which results in a completely tangle-free pull. The SIMpull CoilPAK payoff uses the same inertia-free pulling design as the SIMpull® WireBARREL™ wire drum, making the wire much easier to push and pull.

The CoikPak’s innovative packaging allows for increased versatility on the job site.   The package is molded with a handle that makes it easy to carry around, and when pulling wire from the package, it can lay flat or stacked directly on the floor or lift.  Southwire also offers a cart, dolly and hand truck that are all easily maneuverable and allow for installation of multiple SIMpull CoilPAK payoffs.

Commercial Lighting Control Training

Quick edit - Sean Thomas and Manny Rodriguez presented to us.  So sorry for the mistake Sean!

Thursday, July 25, 2013

We had a great training today at the Lutron Experience Center in Washington, DC.  (if you haven't been there yet, let me know! It is well worth the time.)

Sean Thomas and Manny Rodriguez presented on Commercial Lighting controls and solutions. Lighting typically accounts for 38% of electricity usage a year in new construction and retrofit commercial applications, which include spaces such as classrooms and offices. These applications can benefit from energy savings through various strategies like automatic occupancy/vacancy sensing and daylight harvesting.

Studies show that proper lighting is beneficial to occupants. By providing task-appropriate lighting and individual lighting control, you can improve comfort and occupant satisfaction, resulting in increased productivity.

Lutron's Energi TriPak requires no additional wiring. The components communicate wirelessly via Lutron's reliable Clear Connect Radio Frequency (RF) technology.  In addition, simple button press programming eliminates the need for factory commissioning.

Key points from today and product literature:
-save up to 60% of lighting electricity usage
-increase occupant comfort and productivity
-control virtually all loads
-reduce installation and programming costs

One of the cool products highlighted was Lutron's stairwell LED fixture. The stairwell fixture with PowPak stairwell controller saves energy by reducing light levels when the stairwell is occupied and lowering light levels when it is unoccupied. Want to learn more?  Visit: Energi TriPak components Stairwell Fixture or call me. I'd love to share more.

2013 Presidential Reviewing Stands

Dominion Electric Supply provided the lighting for the 2013 PRESIDENTIAL REVIEWING STANDS.  Stacey Estep in our Commercial Lighting Department was the Salesperson and the Project Manager was Barbara Bosch. The contractor on the project was Heller Electric Company.

This was a very fast paced job that required a significant amount of negotiating with our vendors to achieve the deadline.

Read more about the project on the Electrical Construction and Maintenance website:

http://demo.ecmweb.com/contractor/heller-electric-co-finishes-electric-install-presidential-inauguration

Heller Electric Co. Finishes Electric Install for Presidential Inauguration
This year marks the 11th consecutive time Heller Electric Co., Inc. has completed electric work for the Presidential Inauguration. This year's ceremony is scheduled for January 21. Work on the 57th Presidential Inauguration began almost immediately after the election. Electrical Alliance contractor Heller Electric began electric installation on three separate structures for the ceremony: the Presidential Reviewing Stand, Media Stand, and Mayoral Parade Reviewing Stand the week before Thanksgiving. Since then, an average of nine electricians worked 10-hour days, up to seven days a week to ensure it was completed by January 7.

Health Benefits of LED Lighting

Happy 2013!

Reviewing my ever growing in-box, I did take the time to read the newest Attardi Marketing Energy Watch newsletter.  I always have at least one take away.   This week it was an article about the health benefits of LED Lighting. Fascinating!
The Health Benefits of LED Lighting - Solid-state lighting (SSL) is shaping up to be a remarkably complex technology, combining the sciences of light and color with the potential to provide many features that were previously unattainable in a lighting system. Because LEDs emit light at precise wavelengths—that is, where a specific spectral composition of light is important—they are ripe for medical/health benefit applications. We are just at the threshold of understanding how light levels and colors affect people— the intricacies of the interaction between lighting and our circadian rhythms. When we don’t receive a strong, regular reception of light, our “body clock” malfunctions. If a lighting control system can adjust the spectral content of light as well as the light level throughout the day, imitating the daylong presence of sunlight, it can help our biological clock, or circadian rhythm, stay in sync. http://ecmweb.com/lighting-amp-control/health-benefits-led-lighting
